Healthy Eating on a budget!

You’ve gone from living at home to living on your own here as a University Student in Winchester and now are wondering how to cook healthy, nutritious meals on a budget – especially as Black Friday had too many deals to resist.

Well it is easy to do, ensuring you are eating the right foods will ensure you have the energy and focus for your all important studying!

Breakfast – We all know that ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’ this is because it sets you for the day; and helps with your concentration levels. Easy meal preps for breakfast ideas are below; this means even with late nights and early mornings you’ll be able to ‘grab and go’.

Overnight Oats

This is an easy and simple recipe that anyone can follow; no cook so no fuss. All you need is the below:

Ingredients

  • Oats
  • 120 ml skimmed milk – you can use any milk including non-dairy alternatives
  • Any toppings you prefer for last minute additions

 

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Place the oats (approx. 50g) in a bowl/jar/tupperware.
  • Add the milk (approx. 120ml). The milk should be just covering the oats.
  • Leave in the fridge overnight.

Remove from the fridge and add your favourite toppings before serving our favourite is strawberries, blueberries and honey!

Breakfast Muffins

Another easy recipe which you can prep before hand and then re-heat and grab when needed.

Ingredients

  • 6 eggs
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 4 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled (omit to make vegetarian)
  • 1/2 red pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • Black pepper and salt to taste
  • Olive oil or small amount of butter
  • Muffin tin

 

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Preheat oven to 180 degrees and wipe a tiny bit of oil or butter in the muffin tin
  • In a large bowl, whisk eggs along with salt and pepper. Add the remaining ingredients of choice and stir.
  • Distribute mixture evenly among 6 cups and bake for 20-25 minutes or until eggs are set in middle.
  • These can be stored for 3 days in the fridge; and try adding some spinach leaves, tender stem broccoli or slices of avocado for an ultra-healthy breakfast.

What do to in Winchester this Festive Period

There is plenty of things to do in Winchester over November and December to get into the Christmas Spirt! Look below for some events that are on and be sure to go to them they are well worth a visit.

Winchester light switch on –Thursday 14th November

Celebrate the start of the festive period with the city’s wonderful Christmas lights being switched on, at the broadway outside Winchester guildhall from 6pm. Enjoy and evening of live performances from local acts and help kick start the festive seasons celebrations.

Ice Rink at the Cathedral – 21st Nov 2019 10:00 – 5th Jan 2020

Winchester Cathedral’s Christmas Market is inspired by traditional German Christmas markets and attracts more than 350,000 visitors each year.

The pretty wooden chalets are situated in the Cathedral’s historic Close surrounding the covered, rain-free real ice rink. All exhibitors have been hand-picked for their interesting, high quality and unique products.

Food and Drink
There’s plenty of choice when it comes to food and drink at the Christmas Market. You’ll find chalets selling festive favourites such as, mulled wine, bratwurst, mince pies and stollen. Alternatively, the Cathedral Refectory and Ice Rink Café Bar & Kitchen provide a warm and comfortable setting with plenty of seating and great menus.

British Crafts
Winchester Cathedral invite many British craftspeople to take part in the Christmas Market. If you’re looking for that special something make sure you visit the jewellers, painters, glass makers and textile artists selling unique gifts and decorations.

Nativity Scene
At the far end of the British Crafts Village you will find an enchanting nativity scene – providing an ideal opportunity to share the Christmas story amongst your party and take a fun photograph for Christmas.

Christmas Market in Kingston

Kingston is beautiful throughout the year but especially at Christmas, whether you’re shopping for gifts, celebrating in local bars or restaurants, enjoying shows at the local theatre or immersing yourself in the magic of Christmas by enjoying the Christmas Market.

The Christmas Market returns on Thursday 14th November, on the same date that the Christmas lights are turned on in Kingston.

Kingston becomes Christmassy on Thursday 14th November 2019, get into the Christmas spirit and enjoy the entertainment throughout the town centre from 4.30pm. There will be a packed schedule including a traditional brass band, light-up drummers, balloon modelling, stilt walkers and entertainment on stage.

The lights will be officially turned on at 6pm with a little bit of snow magic by the Snow Queen herself!!

Kingston Christmas Market

The Market can be located just ahead of All Saint’s Church and adds a special touch of festive cheer to the Kingston.

The Market includes traditional wooden cabins, with handmade giftware, stockings and unique gifts. There are bars serving up steaming mugs of mulled wine and the street food is fantastic. On Thursday 14th there will be live entertainment on stage and a fire pit for toasting marshmallows.

This is the perfect way to get into the Christmas Spirit, we have made sure all of our Kingston students are aware in Bright House and Greencoat House.

In case you don’t make the Christmas lights on celebration you really should visit the market at some point, you will not be disappointed!

Getting into the Pumpkin-Spiced Mood this October!

It is now October; the most magical time of the year is just around the corner. However, we should not forget that before then there is the scariest night of all – Halloween night. Here are some easy tips and tricks on how to get into the Halloween mood on a budget friendly way.

Scary Movie Marathon

Have you always been afraid of watching scary movies alone? That is the perfect time to get together with your flatmates and watch the scariest movies of all, for example series Annabelle or Conjuring. The shared kitchen spaces at our Winchester property’s Cathedral Point and Riverside Way are perfect for it. Don’t forget to make some popcorn and get some hot chocolate with marshmallows!

Bake Off – Student Edition

There is nothing better than starting breakfast with cookies. Especially if those cookies are pumpkin-cherry and have been baked with joint effort. Baking together will highly increase your festive mood and possibly decrease cleanliness of the kitchen, but that’s another story.

Halloween Tour of Winchester

Join one of the Societies in Winchester University

You’ve arrived at University, you’ve unpacked into your new room so now what?

Arriving at University can be a daunting prospect but there are many ways to make new friends and joining a society is one of those! Joining a society is a great way to make new friends, whilst giving you a break from all the studying and partying too!

Don’t think that societies are just based around sports; as they definitely aren’t! They are a fabulous way of exploring and expanding your skill set.

Yes there are sport societies, which are great for exercising and releasing those all important endorphins, but they also range in the creative arts to political groups to hobbies and even some niche groups.

Sport societies are a huge part of both University of Southampton and University of Winchester life, so maybe you have a sport you played at home and don’t want to get out of touch or you just fancy something different then why not join up?

Whilst those who wish to delve into their passions or could be passionshave their pick also with both University of Winchester and University of Southampton having student led clubs such as Wine Tasting, Harry Potter Societies amongst many more.

Exploration is key but also is commitment you are at University here in Winchester to study, but the some societies will need commitment both in time and money so factor this into your weekly planner when you are deciding.

Most societies have Social Secretaries who are responsible for the “fun” including themed nights out to day trips or if you’re lucky a trip away!!
